This article is a Committee Opinion developed by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists’ Committee on Obstetric Practice and the American Society of Addiction Medicine (August 2017). This information is designed as an educational resource to aid clinicians in providing obstetric and gynecologic care. The article discusses how screening should be a universal part of comprehensive care for pregnant women. In general, a coordinated multidisciplinary approach without criminal sanctions has the best chance of helping infants and families.
